A Pilgrim’s Progress

May 2010

As the title of the exhibition “A Pilgrim’s Progress” implies, this body of work is a record of my most recent efforts in the studio.

In response to the question of how an artist develops, an early painting teacher of mine once said, “just finish a hundred paintings”. Thirty years and thousands of paintings later, this thought is still as true as ever. Who I am and what I do in the studio every day is an organic process. “Getting there” is not as important as “being here”.

If a Pilgrim is seeking the Divine, it is a road of self-discovery. For an artist, the journey also involves communication. The medium we choose, the scale, the style, all become part of the memos that an artist sends to the world.
