Artist’s Statement
December 1991
My latest series of paintings, Inner Life, strive to make the unseen visible. The world we know and see is like the clothing on a person. Our ‘essence’ or ‘spirit’ is what I try to uncover as an artist. To accomplish this I am using imagery that, while not easily definable, is based in the world we know and see. Nature, with its endless cycles of regeneration, provide an appropriate setting for the inner life I try to portray.
For art to reach people it must first convey a comfort in familiarity and only then can it challenge or question the viewers responses.
These paintings are a manifesto for me, celebrating every aspect of life, (and therefore inner life). Even mystery serves to proclaim an order that is bigger than us all.
